The Hercules Trophy Corporate Competition is a worldwide inter-company sporting team day designed for networking and team-building. Randall’s Island Park Alliance invites you to a morning filled with FREE art, music, sports and snacks along the Park’s waterfront pathways as we celebrate the eagerly anticipated re-opening of the restored 103rd Street Footbridge!

Walk across the Footbridge and enjoy this FREE public event featuring FLOW.12 – an artwork exhibit along the southern waterfront, reflecting the Island’s history and natural environment. Meet the artist or just take it all in!

Besides FLOW.12, there will be other fun and fabulous entertainment:

The event begins at the touchdown of the 103rd Street Footbridge, near the East River Fields at Randall’s Island Park, at 10 am.  Walk across the footbridge from the East River Esplanade, have some fun and learn about all that Randall’s Island Park has to offer!

Randall’s Island Park Alliance (formerly known as the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation) will once again be a Bronze Level Charity in the 2012 ING New York City Marathon, the Premier Event of the New York Road Runners. This year’s race is scheduled for Sunday, November 4, and we have a limited amount of guaranteed race entries into the marathon for those that want to run and raise funds to support RIPA! Our team members will not only get aguaranteed entry into the marathon, but also other perks such as assistance fundraising, apparel, training sessions/advice, a team dinner, and more. For runners that have already received an entry into the marathon from NYRR we have opportunities for you to join our team as well.

In an effort to make fundraising as easy as possible for our team members, we are working with Crowdrise – the ING NYC Marathon official fundraising website. Crowdrise gives each of our team member the ability to set up their own individual page complete with pictures, your story and social networking feeds. Each team member must raise a minimum of $3,000 in support of RIPA (the minimum is set by NYRR). In addition, runners are also responsible for paying their own NYRR registration fee.

By joining Team Randall’s Island you will be raising funds to support the Alliance. RIPA is a 501(c)(3) that works with the City and local communities to provide an innovative and exciting destination through a wide range of sports venues, cultural events and environmental exploration.

As the dedicated steward of Randall’s Island Park, the Alliance sustains, maintains, develops and programs the Park  support the well being of all New Yorkers. In 2010, RIPA cut the ribbon on over 60 new athletic fields – the most fields of any Manhattan park! In 2008, RIPA finished a $5 million dollar project to restore 9 acres of wetlands, which is now improving water quality, providing wildlife habitat and a place for school children to learn about the environment. This year, RIPA has added over a mile of bicycle/pedestrian access under the Hell Gate bridge, the latest addition to a waterfront pathway system that is an ideal route for both novice and professional runners.

The Hell Gate Pathway runs under the sand-colored arches of the Hell Gate Bridge and railroad trestle, and once fully completed will connect the Hell Gate rapids to the south of Randall’s Island Park with the Bronx Kill to its north. It is a key part of an Island-wide pathway system, opening over a mile of dedicated bicycle and pedestrian access along a combination of renovated pathways and more recently reclaimed parkland and linking points adjacent to all three surrounding boroughs of Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx. The light and shadows created by the arcade and the warm sand color of the bridge piers create an unusual and spectacular visual experience. The section we are opening in April is especially critical in creating access to more than 30 new baseball, softball and soccer fields at the Park’s northeastern quadrant, and in connecting directly to the first at-grade access from the South Bronx, slated for construction by NYCEDC in 2013.

Design of the Pathway was funded through a federal DOT Transportation Enhancements Program (TEP) grant with a local match from the Manhattan Borough President. Construction was made possible by Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) grants from the New York State Department of State and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation alongside funding from the Office of the Mayor of the City of New York.  Amtrak, which runs Northeast Corridor service along the Hell Gate trestle, partnered with RISF and DPR by contributing over $15 million toward securing the bridge to ensure safe passage under its arches.

Dedication of Baseball Field 48 for David Braun-Friedman

There will be several brief remarks by RIPA and David’s family. Following the dedication Field 48, an inaugural baseball game will take place on the new field between David’s friends and his former Longhorn teammates.

The Randall’s Island Sports Foundation (RISF), The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, a two-part environmental art exhibition on view during the summers of 2011 and 2012 along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park. The project is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. FLOW features ten site specific art projects, five each summer, by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.11 was a great success, fostering a coalition of environmental, musical and artistic partners. Summer park visitors and concertgoers visited the artworks alongside the river, looking out across the city’s skyline.

FLOW.12 – this year’s exhibition – will be open to the public from June-September, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment.

FLOW has been made possible through a generous grant from the Rockefeller Foundation’s New York City Cultural Innovation Fund (CIF) and through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Come out Randall’s Island Park on Saturday, September 17, 2011 to participate in a shoreline clean-up event. This event is part of the American Littoral Society’s 26^th Annual International Coastal Cleanup Day. During the event, volunteers will work with the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation’s Natural Areas Crew to remove litter from along the Harlem River, East River, and Bronx Kill Shorelines. Let’s keep trash out of waterways!

Meeting Location: Icahn Stadium (east entrance).

Tools/Equipment: Gloves, trash bags, and trash pickers will be provided. Please wear sturdy, closed toe shoes. Bring water and sunscreen.
