A week after his death and three days after he was laid to rest in a Trinity, Fla., cemetery north of Tampa, George Steinbrenner’s aura still looms large over the Yankees and every extension of the franchise.
“It’s been a very difficult week because of my relationship with him, more than just being a baseball player. He meant a great deal to a lot of people, touched a lot of lives. I think a lot of times that was overlooked because he was The Boss,” former Yankees and Mets slugger Darryl Strawberry said Tuesday. “Everybody looked at him more because of everything he said about the Yankees and winning all the time.”
Strawberry was on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of a baseball tournament on Randall’s Island that was sponsored by Verdero sporting goods, a Bronx-based company founded by Jorge Medina.
