NY Mycological Society Walk – Fungus Among Us
October 14, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Join our Natural Areas crew and experts from the New York Mycological Society on a tour of the island to search for the fruits of fungi that can be found on Randall’s Island.
Did you know? Fungi are unique unto themselves. Fungi are units of cells working together and functioning like natures nervous system. Often underground or in logs, their networks of cells support plant life by making nutrients available. Some plants can only exist with certain fungi. Humans use fungi for food, medicine, research. The cool moist weather of fall causes many fungi to fruit, the only time they’ll be visible above ground in order to spread their spores. These mysterious but potent organisms have the ability to break down pollution and rebuild the environment. Join as we explore the park looking for and help us document these incredible organisms! This is a free event.
Fun fact: fungi are known to be the largest organism in the world with one measuring nearly 2.5 miles in Oregon
Location: south entrance of the Icahn Stadium
