Randall’s Island Literary Club – Vesper Flights Discussion Series
January 28, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join the Randall’s Island Literary Club as we read Helen Macdonald’s Vesper Flights (Grove Press, New York, 2020). In addition to a group discussion, the event will also feature speaking guests who will explore how Macdonald’s reflections on nature connect with the birds and wildlife found on Randall’s Island. The discussions will be facilitated by Elizabeth Howard, Writer in Residence.
Week 2: Elizabeth Howard in conversation with Andrew Farnsworth, Senior Research Associate, with an expertise in bird migration and radar ornithology at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Andrew spent an evening with Helen Macdonald on the top of the Empire State building to watch “a wildlife phenomenon that twice a year sweeps almost unseen above the city: The seasonal night flights of migrating birds.”
This is a free event, but registration is required.
The online group will meet for 4 sessions from 6:30pm-7:30pm (EST): January 14th, January 28th, February 11th and February 25th. We hope that you will decide to join us for all 4 sessions but each session will have its own theme, so please feel free to register for any or all of the sessions.
