Karim Hutson

As Managing Member of Genesis, Karim is responsible for providing strategic and day-to-day leadership of the company and helps to guide its future growth. Karim founded Genesis out of a desire to strengthen urban communities and ameliorate as much as possible the blight and substandard housing he saw while growing up. Karim’s career is highlighted by his commitment to creating and preserving affordable housing. His emphasis on making neighborhoods more livable, his team’s ability to negotiate complex community relationships and problems, to build consensus that facilitates the intersection of public policy and the needs of low-income residents are key factors in attracting business to the Genesis pipeline while benefiting the community at large. Of note, Karim has received community and municipal acclaim for his innovative approach to community development.

Karim is an award-winning developer who is active in community organizations, acting as Treasurer of the Trustee Board of the First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem, Board member of Citizens Housing Planning Council and a Member of the Executive Committee of NYSAFAH. He is a former Vice-Chair of the Board of Habitat for Humanity – NYC and was a former Member of the Board of the New Jersey School Development Authority and the Dalton School. Karim’s engagement in his community leads to introductions that open doors in new communities and has extended his reputation beyond the NYC region into New Jersey.

Karim holds a B.A. in Economics and Philosophy from Amherst College, an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a M.T.S. from Harvard Divinity School. Prior to founding Genesis, Hutson was a Vice President at Full Spectrum of NY, Investment Banker with Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs in New York City and a Private Equity Investor with General Atlantic in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Karim is married to Luz Elenia Gandulla-Hutson and has two daughters.
